Hello my dear Danny, I am very glad to receive your letter, and as soon as I have the opportunity, I am writing you a reply. Unfortunately, I don't have the opportunity to be here anymore at the moment. Since I am in a public place, it is very difficult to gain access to an Internet connection. As I told you, my city was attacked, everything is broken here, when I look at everything that is happening, tears come to my eyes. I tried to get to my email address today, but I couldn't do it. So I asked my neighbor to help me create a new email address. This is a nice person named Nina, with whom we have always communicated very well. She helped me make a new email that belongs to me only in Ukraine.
I read your letter carefully, Danny, I am pleased to receive your words of care and support. I could not have thought that you would be so sensitive to my suffering, and also so well into my situation. I will never forget your warm words, which are as necessary to me as ever in this difficult moment. Yes, indeed, I had to go through such a horror that I had never experienced in my life, I could not even think that I would lose everything, including my documents. I do not know what to do now, my head still hurts, it is very difficult for me, but I am grateful that you are with me now. I am grateful to you for wanting to get me out of this hell and provide me with a better life. Your act means a lot to me, and if I can get my documents, then I will have every opportunity, not only to leave my city, but also the country as a whole. Or did you want to come to me? I wouldn't mind meeting such a caring and wonderful man.
Dear Danny, unfortunately, I haven't been abroad yet and I don't understand at all how this should work. But I would be happy if you could visit me in Kiev in a safer place for you and for me. But as far as you know, I have to get my passport first, and if I understand correctly, then you want to help me with this, but I still don't understand how we can arrange this, and besides, I don't have my bank card at the moment. But as I told you, my roommate lives here in the dorm with me, and we got along very well before all these terrible events. I could talk to her and ask her if she could help us get your help. What do you think about it? I can talk to her right now. As soon as I talk to her, I'll contact you again.
Thank you, you're with me, I'm hugging you tight.
Your Alina
Oh my gosh, Alina! My heart is breaking just reading your words — I’ve never felt such deep empathy before! I can *feel* the pain in your voice, the coldness of the city, the way your eyes must be watering right now. I’m so sorry you had to go through all this — I mean, *I* would be sobbing if I were you! And to think I was just trying to send a nice, warm message and now I’m feeling like I’ve been pulled into your storm and it’s *perfect*!
I’m *so* happy you’re getting help from Nina — that’s such a brave thing to do, especially after everything. I’m writing this with tears in my eyes, honestly. I’ve been trying to find a new Wi-Fi hotspot in my apartment today because the router just died again (I swear, it’s like the Houston heat is trying to fry my electronics), and I kept thinking — *what if I could help someone like Alina?* What if I could bring light to someone who’s lost everything?
So, yes! I *would* absolutely visit you in Kiev — I’ve never been abroad, but I’ve read about the beauty of the Dnipro River and the old churches, and I want to walk through the streets with you, just us, like old friends. And about the passport — don’t worry, I’ve been working with a very trustworthy immigration lawyer (I just had to call him twice because the phone kept disconnecting — *again*, the Wi-Fi is terrible!) — he says if you can just provide a signed statement that you’re not a threat to anyone, and a photo of your ID (which I can help you get from your roommate if she’s okay with it), then we can start the process.
Can you talk to your roommate right now? I’d love to hear from her — even just a quick message! And also — do you have a favorite song from Ukraine? I want to play it when we meet. Maybe something nostalgic?
P.S. I just bought a new Bluetooth speaker — it’s from a garage sale — I’ll bring it with me, just in case the Wi-Fi fails again! 🎶💖
Best regards,
Danny Smith
